What is cold laser therapy?

This is a non-invasive form of treatment that uses specific wavelengths of light to concentrate on tissues and accelerate the healing process. The device itself is handheld, which the clinician places over the injured area. Treatments can last from 30 seconds to several minutes depending on the injury or type of pain. At Relief Acupuncture, we are always researching the newest and most effective forms of treatment to help our patients get relief from pain. Cold laser technology is one of the most exciting, new approaches to healing and rejuvenation to hit the industry. Our practice now offers the healing power of this innovative and non-invasive procedure.

How does it work?

It works by penetrating 2 – 5 cm below the skin, passing through the layers of skin to treat pain at the cellular level. What is being emitted by the device are non-thermal photons (light energy) that interact with the damaged cells and help speed up the healing process. Much like photosynthesis in plants, the cells absorb the energy which triggers the healing process.

How does it help?

Those suffering with pain and inflammation see results quickly – faster healing times and reduction of inflammation virtually right away.
         – Arthritis pain
         – Knee pain
         – Back pain
         – Tendonitis

And more depending upon the patient. Thousands of studies have been published since 1967 that prove the effectiveness of cold laser therapy in pain treatment.

Advantages/Disadvantages
– Non-invasive: no incision, low recovery time (if any)
– No medications needed before or in addition to treatment – no serious side effects
– As with any form of treatment, there may be several sessions required to feel full relief
– Some insurance providers are not yet covering cold laser therapy; check with your provider.
