FDA Warnings on NSAID Heart Failure Risks
Last month, the FDA released more information on the level of risk associated with over the counter NSAID painkillers. The FDA has intensified the level of risk associated with taking drugs like Motrin, Advil and Aleve as these drugs are linked to heart failure related deaths. Heart attack and stroke are both associated with NSAID use; prior to this update, it was thought that those affected were individuals with cardiovascular risks, but has now concluded that everyone is at risk.
Typically, these medications are taken for the treatment of fevers, aches, pains, cramps, gout, arthritis and other joint conditions. They are known as ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) and naproxen (Aleve). It is still not determined what length of usage causes the most risk, so the FDA is advising, “There is no period of use shown to be without risk.” Risk can occur as early as the first weeks of usage, and increases with dosage.
